Term 1, Week 11 - 11 April, 2025
CBC acknowledges that we are meeting on the traditional country of the Kaurna people of the Adelaide Plains. We recognise and respect their cultural heritage, beliefs and relationship with the land. We acknowledge that they are of continuing importance to the Kaurna people living today.

This week's Principal's Message from Mr David Johnston

Lee Del Col

Lee Del Col

It certainly has been a rich and full term. And when one views the somnolent dawdle of our boys entering the gates this week (and some staff), it is fair to surmise that the upcoming break is welcome. However, when looking back on the term, there is undoubtedly a great deal to celebrate.

One of our recurring agenda items in the weekly Senior Campus Leadership Team meeting is Happy Gossip. While certainly a little cliché in title for my liking, the point of this item is to recognise the people and happenings of the Senior Campus. Essentially, it reminds us that our community is brilliant amidst the fog of operational matters. So, I close the term with some highlights:

  • Our Year 7s have had the smoothest transition into High School in my time at CBC. From the get-go, they have engaged in classes, been respectful, accessed support, attended camp and genuinely lifted the mood with their cherubic enthusiasm. Congratulations to Mr Atkinson (Assistant Director of Students – Middle School) and the Heads of House for overseeing this crucial juncture of young people’s schooling.
  • While I may not have the most musical of ears, the brilliant performances of all our bands, choirs, ensembles, and so forth may even entice me to download the Spotify app. In particular, their performances at the City of Sounds concert were exceptional. We are lucky to have Ms Khafagi (Director of Performing Arts) leading the program as it thrives and swells in participation.
  • Our Student Leaders have equally had a stellar term. The Prefects set a new record for the World’s Greatest Shave, generating $20,000 for an important cause while orchestrating a fun-fuelled day that saw history as Mr Carr bid farewell to a 40-year-old beard. Their presence at many out-of-school events speaks to their passion for the school and ability to represent it.
  • Our Heads of Learning, led by Mr Salamone (Director of Teaching and Learning), are busy case-managing our students and preparing them for the throes of Senior Schooling. The literacy and numeracy support programs, tutoring, and gifted and talented (to name a few) are underway. But most crucially, the staff are imbuing these programs into the boys’ learning routine rather than simply offering them. It is the personal touch!
  • Ms Tia Milohis (Career and Flexible Pathways Counsellor) is in the final stages of finalising agreements with TAFE and Adelaide University to diversify and build on the opportunities we offer. Watch this space.

These are only some of the many examples. We are only one term down. Over the break, our Year 12s will be in and out of school attending Holiday Sessions led by their teachers – another example of how lucky we are to have the staff committed to the boys’ outcomes. And next term, we welcome Matthew Sharman from Tottenham Hotspur as he begins working with our boys in the classroom and on the soccer field. There is still a lot to achieve and be done. As for now, have a safe and well-earned break!

Deputy Principal – Head of Senior Campus

Alphabet Day is Coming – and You are Invited to Join the Fun!

We are excited to announce that on Friday 2 May (Week 1, Term 2), we will be celebrating Alphabet Day – a fun and imaginative event where students are encouraged to dress up as something beginning with one of their initials.

This year, we are inviting our wonderful parent community to get involved too! Whether you are helping in the classroom, attending morning drop-off, or just joining in the excitement, we would love to see you dressed as something that starts with your own initials. Your involvement brings an extra layer of fun and connection for everyone.

To add a twist of creativity, each letter will be given its Scrabble tile value, and we will be tallying up points based on costume themes! Here are a few examples:

  • Pirate (P = 3, I = 1, R = 1, A = 1, T = 1, E = 1) → Total = 8 points
  • Astronaut (A = 1, S = 1, T = 1, R = 1, O = 1, N = 1, A = 1, U = 1, T = 1) → Total = 9 points
  • Doctor (D = 2, O = 1, C = 3, T = 1, O = 1, R = 1) → Total = 9 points

It is a great way to bring some wordplay into our day and celebrate the A to Z of imagi-nation!

For those new to our community, last year’s Harry Potter Day transformed the Junior Campus into a magical Hogwarts. This year, Alphabet Day is shaping up to be just as colourful and creative, with students, staff and now parents all taking part.

Our teachers are already busily planning their own outfits, and the entire staff is once again getting involved to make the day extra special. We can’t wait to see what clever, original and high-scoring costume ideas come to life!

Sports Day

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of our Sports Day! From the early morning setup to the final race, the day ran smoothly thanks to the support and enthusiasm of our staff, students, and volunteers. The sense of community was truly evident, with everyone coming together to cheer on the boys, encourage one another, and celebrate the spirit of friendly competition.

A special thank you to Mr B and Mr Megins for their outstanding coordination of the day’s events. Their careful planning, organisation, and energy ensured the boys felt confident, prepared, and excited to take part in every activity. The oval was awash with house colours, and it was fantastic to see not only the students proudly representing their teams, but also so many parents and caregivers joining in, dressed in their son’s house colours. Your presence created a vibrant and joyful atmosphere, making the day even more special for our school community.

Waterford House wins the Junior Campus Sports Day Cup

Nagle House winners of the Combined Sport Days Trophy

Congratulations to Nagle who were the combined Junior Campus and Senior Campus winners. In the Junior Campus it was Waterford who came out on top in the events of the day displaying outstanding sportsmanship and a positive attitude throughout.  Avila was awarded the House Spirit Trophy; their encouragement of teammates, respectful behaviour, and enthusiasm reflected the true spirit of the day.  Well done to all!

Thank you once again to everyone who made the day such a wonderful celebration of teamwork, resilience, and school spirit.

Year 5 Camp to Port Hughes

Our Year 5 students have had an unforgettable time at camp in Port Hughes, taking full advantage of the beautiful coastal setting and a wide variety of hands-on outdoor activities. From fishing and snorkelling to kayaking, raft building, and kart construction, the boys embraced every challenge with enthusiasm and teamwork. While the mornings were cool, the afternoons brought perfect weather for outdoor fun, and the students made the most of every moment.

We’ve been incredibly impressed by the boys’ behaviour, their positive attitudes, and the respectful way they conducted themselves within their groups. Their cooperation and willingness to support one another truly stood out. A heartfelt thank you to Mr Simon Nardecchia, Ms Lauren Mercer, Mrs Sara Papathanasopoulos, Ms Shenae Dougan, and Mr Oliver Megins for generously giving their time and energy to accompany the boys on this trip. Their care and leadership made this experience so special for our Year 5 cohort.

Term 2 Uniform Reminder – Blazer and Tie Required

As we approach the end of Term 1, we would like to remind families of the uniform expectations for Term 2, which includes the transition to the formal winter uniform.

From the first day of Term 2, all students are required to wear their college blazer and tie as part of the full winter uniform. These items are an important part of our school’s identity and reflect the pride we take in presentation and belonging to our community.

To ensure your son is fully prepared, we strongly encourage you to have him try on his uniform during the break to check for sizing and fit. This will allow ample time to purchase any new or replacement items from the Uniform Shop before the start of the new term.

As always, we appreciate your support in upholding the college’s uniform expectations and helping your son start Term 2 with confidence and pride.

If you have any questions regarding uniform requirements or shop opening hours, please don’t hesitate to contact the school.

Project Compassion – Lenten Activities

This week marked the end of our Lenten activities, with our final fundraiser – Guess the Number of Eggs in the Jar – bringing plenty of excitement and friendly competition!

A heartfelt thank you to everyone for your incredible generosity and support throughout Lent. Thanks to your contributions, we have raised over $1,200 for Project Compassion, helping support the important work of Caritas Australia in communities around the world.

Your kindness and spirit of giving truly reflect the values we aim to instil in our students. Well done to everyone involved!

Holy Week

As we enter Holy Week, we are invited to pause and reflect on the profound journey of Jesus's final days, leading to His death and resurrection. It is a time of solemn remembrance, but also one of great hope. Holy Week reminds us of the deep love, sacrifice, and compassion that Christ showed for all of humanity. In the busyness of our lives, this sacred time calls us to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with our faith and the values that matter most–kindness, forgiveness, humility, and love.

We also take this moment to thank you, our families, for sharing your sons with us. We are truly grateful for the opportunity to walk alongside them each day, to guide, support, and celebrate their growth. It is a privilege we don’t take for granted, and we appreciate every moment we have with them. As we journey toward Easter, may we all carry a renewed sense of gratitude, hope, and connection – both in our school community and in our own lives.

Learner Review Meetings Advanced Warning

On Monday 12 May, we will be holding our Learner Review Conversations, a valuable opportunity for students to take an active role in sharing their learning journey. Please note that this day is a pupil-free day; however, it is compulsory that your son accompanies you, as he will be leading the conversation. Each student will have thoughtfully prepared what they wish to share, including reflections on their achievements, challenges, and goals. These conversations are a powerful way to encourage student ownership of learning and to celebrate progress together.

You will receive an email invitation (not SEQTA) to book your 15-minute conversation early next month. If you would like to discuss anything in more detail or speak specifically about your son’s academic progress or wellbeing, we kindly ask that you arrange a separate meeting time with the class teacher. We look forward to welcoming you and your son to these important conversations and thank you for your continued support in fostering a strong partnership in his learning.

Turning Little Drawings into Big Impact – Tea Towel Fundraiser

The Junior Campus is running a Tea Towel Fundraiser to raise money for a Lego wall in the wellbeing Room.

Our limited-edition Tea Towel design will be made up of self-portraits drawn by all our children and staff. Just like a yearbook on a tea towel. The pictures and names will be arranged all together as a commemorative design and then screen printed onto certified organic 100% cotton 50x70cm tea towels.

As well as being great for lint-free dish drying, the tea towels look fantastic and are a long-lasting memento for your children and their friends. They make great gifts that are easily mailed to relatives, so make sure you order a few extras for family members and your keepsake box.

The kids just love seeing their artwork in print. By purchasing our tea towels you are not only receiving a practical keepsake, but you are also helping to achieve our fundraising goal, which would not be possible without your support!  The more we sell the more Lego we will be able to purchase.

The price per towel is $20.

The Tea Towel print run is limited so make sure you, your family and friends don't miss out. There is an example tea towel on display in the front office at the Junior Campus, so you can see the quality and size.

Tea towels can be ordered on the QKR! app and final Orders are due: Tuesday 29 April at 9am.

Teacher Spotlight: Ms Ann Ozgo

What inspired you to become a teacher?

I was looking to learn for a change after a lengthy time in my previous school and was offered a year’s exchange. I learnt very quickly that what I thought had been good practice with boys was actually OK practice. I set about learning as much as I could with an amazing set of mentors on the Junior Campus. I enjoy teaching the boys – hands on, explain it to me, and don’t try to fool me! I also continue to work with amazing colleagues.

What is one lesson or skill you hope every student takes away from your class?

The importance of growing and maintaining a Growth Mindset would be the one thing I wish for every student to understand. Challenge, change, and success are a part of their life. If we learn what can be changed and improved we can make a huge difference, personally and on a wider scale. As colleagues say, 'Make a plan, and be ready to make plan B.'

What’s a fun fact about you that might surprise students or parents?

My father was a mechanic and a passionate motoring enthusiast, with both vintage touring cars and racing cars. I’m not so good on the mechanics but have spent a lot of time at racetracks as a pit crew or a race commentator. I even managed to commentate for the Clipsal 500, Adelaide Rally and the Adelaide Motorsport Festival. I’m still very much involved with my car club.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received about teaching?

I’ve been lucky to work with great people who have shared with me so …

  • Be flexible – you never know what the day will bring.
  • Always remember that tomorrow is a new day with new chances for everyone.
  • Sometimes a lesson is just not going to work – give it up!
  • As a teacher, I need to keep on learning!

What role do you think parents play in supporting their child’s education?

Parents are critical to a student's learning. It is from parents that our attitudes towards school and learning begin – like a love of books because bedtime stories were such an important part of each day. Answering and encouraging the thousands of questions, exposing our children to new experiences even as simple as exploring a rock pool or watching birds in the garden. It makes me sad to see children in shopping carts and restaurants with a device rather than being engaged in conversation.

How do you stay motivated and inspired as a teacher?

Every 'ah ha moment', every 'Oh, that’s how you do it.' And most recently, 'I know you sometimes get cross with me but you are my best teacher ever, so far.'

Teacher Spotlight: Ms Jo Tao

What inspired you to become a teacher?

My parents. My mum was an English teacher, and my dad was a Physics teacher.

How long have you been teaching, and what subjects/grades have you taught?

I have been teaching for 13 years, I have taught Chinese from reception to Year 9, Year 8 Maths and Year 11 Business and Enterprise.

How do you create a positive and engaging learning environment in your classroom?

Build positive relationships with my students, by initiating Chinese greetings at the start of the lesson and letting students have student autonomy.

What do you enjoy doing outside of teaching (hobbies, sports, travel, etc.)?

Hiking, cooking and travelling.

What are you most looking forward to this school year?

As I am starting to teach typing Chinese words for Year 3s and 4s this year, I am really looking forward to seeing how much my students can achieve by the end of the year.

What is the most rewarding moment you’ve had as a teacher?

The most rewarding moment I have had as a teacher is the look in the eyes of a student who struggles with a topic and suddenly understands the concept after different methods of approach. The joy of realising and understanding of the topic from that student.

Staff Farewell and New Appointments

As Term 1 draws to a close, we extend our heartfelt thanks to Ms Krystle Helps, who will soon begin her maternity leave. In her time as Head of Learning: SACE and Flexible Pathways, she has been a guiding presence for our students and a valued support for staff across the College. Her dedication, leadership, and compassion have made a meaningful difference, and we wish her all the very best as she prepares for this exciting and busy period.

Looking ahead to Term 2, we are pleased to welcome two new members to our academic leadership team:

Ms Tia Milohis, will be joining as Head of SACE.

For any SACE-related enquiries, you can contact her via tmilohis@cbc.sa.edu.au

Mr Joshua Roach will take on the role of Head of Learning – Flexible Pathways.

For queries related to EIF, AIF, Workplace Practices or support strategies, you can reach him at jbroach@cbc.sa.edu.au

Both bring a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to student learning.

We look forward to the contribution they will make to our school community and their respective portfolios.

Year 12 Holiday Seminars

Families of Year 12 students would have recently received a direct message outlining the details of our upcoming holiday seminars, which will run over the break. These seminars, designed and led by Year 12 subject teachers, aim to provide targeted, subject-specific support and enrichment at a pivotal time in the academic year.

Some sessions will involve individual bookings to work on assessments, while others will provide opportunities to review examinable content, get ahead in the course, or make progress on external components of the subject. Each session is supervised and structured to ensure students get the most out of the time provided.

We strongly encourage our Year 12s to attend where possible. These seminars are an excellent way to:

  • Consolidate and deepen understanding of key content
  • Receive individualised feedback and direction
  • Prepare thoroughly for upcoming assessments and examinations
  • Reduce pressure during the term by getting ahead
  • Demonstrate commitment to the pursuit of academic excellence

With one of three terms now complete, the finish line is gradually drawing closer. Every moment counts, and these seminars offer students the chance to take charge of their learning and make the most of the time remaining.

Reporting Update for Years 7–11

We also take this opportunity to remind families that interim reports are no longer issued for students in Years 7 to 11, as part of a change introduced last year. Instead, students and families can look forward to receiving comprehensive semester-based reports at the end of next term, providing a more meaningful reflection of student growth, achievement, and areas for development.

Parent/Teacher Interviews – Year 7-12

We’d like to give families an early heads-up that our Parent/Teacher Interviews will be held on Monday, 12 May (Week 3, Term 2). This day will be a student-free day, set aside to allow meaningful conversations between families and your son’s subject teachers.

All interviews will be conducted via phone, offering flexibility and convenience for families. More details about how to book your interview times will be provided early next term. In the meantime, please save the date. We look forward to working in partnership with you to support your son’s learning journey.

Student Leaders Inspired at GRIP Leadership Conference

On Tuesday, 2 April 2025, a group of enthusiastic Year 8, 9, and 10 student leaders represented our school at the GRIP Leadership Conference in Adelaide. The event brought together hundreds of student leaders from across the state to engage in a day of interactive workshops, inspiring keynote sessions, and practical leadership training.

The GRIP Leadership Conference is designed specifically for student leaders, with a strong focus on developing skills that can be immediately applied within the school community. Our students participated in sessions that explored topics such as leading with integrity, encouraging others, and taking initiative to make positive changes.

The students returned with fresh ideas, renewed confidence, and a strong sense of purpose. We look forward to seeing how they will use what they’ve learned to continue making a meaningful impact within our school.

Middle School Update

As we wrap up a busy and successful Term 1, we take a moment to celebrate some key highlights from our Middle School community.

Firstly, congratulations to our newly appointed Year 7 House Leaders for 2025. These students have shown outstanding leadership potential and commitment to our College values:

  • Avila – Ayden Bullock
  • Callan – James Mai
  • Nagle – Kiyan Patel
  • Sion – Jacob Penfold
  • Treacy – Josef Capasso
  • Waterford – Jake Tran

We are incredibly proud of these students and look forward to seeing their leadership in action throughout the year.

For our Year 9 students, Term 2 includes two key events within their Rite Journey Program. The first is the Mentor Breakfast on Tuesday, 20th of May, at 7:15 am in the Western Yard. This compulsory event will connect our students with CBC Old Scholars, providing an opportunity for inspiration, guidance and reflection. The breakfast will include an engaging panel discussion and a free coffee cart for our guests and students.

Following the breakfast, Year 9s will participate in their Rite Journey Camp from Monday, 2nd of June to Friday, 6th of June, held at Camp Illawonga near Swan Reach. This outdoor experience includes bushwalking, kayaking, rock climbing, and team-building activities to develop resilience, independence, and friendships. Attendance is compulsory, and the Operoo consent form must be completed by Monday, 9th of May.

As we end the term, we would like to thank all of our Year 7 to 9 students for a fantastic start to the year. We wish you and your families a safe and joyful holiday break, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back for Term 2, refreshed and ready for the exciting year ahead.

Warm regards,

Celebrating Lent and Preparing for Holy Week

A special Mass brought our College community together to celebrate Lent and prepare our hearts for Holy Week, beginning this Sunday with Palm Sunday, as we move towards the Easter season.

This is a time to reflect on our faith, embrace the Christian message of hope, and respond to God’s call to live with love and compassion, inspired by the story of the Resurrection.

This year is significant for Catholics, as it marks a Jubilee Year – a special celebration that occurs once every 25 years. In the past, jubilees were times for forgiving debts, freeing prisoners, and allowing the land to rest. Today, a Jubilee year calls us to share God’s love, show kindness, and forgive others. The theme for this year’s Jubilee is “Pilgrims of Hope,” which invites us to walk together and spread hope and kindness to those around us.

Throughout Lent, our College community has supported Project Compassion, Caritas Australia's annual appeal to bring hope and dignity to vulnerable communities across the globe.

As Orville (College Captain), Mr. Johnston, Father Matthew, and I shared with the gathered during the Mass, we are called to challenge injustices and live out the ‘love and compassion’ we pray for each day. As a community, we are called to be true 'brothers and sisters to others,' which is the essence of Easter.

A big thanks to Father Matthew Newman, our College priest, for leading the Mass each week and to all the staff and students who contributed to today’s celebration. Special thanks to the new altar servers, readers, prayer leaders, and the Vocal Project for leading the music.

Wishing all a joyful and blessed Holy Easter!

Celebrating Culture: Thriving People Event with Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students

Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from Reception to Year 10 had a fantastic day at the Thriving People event!

They spent the day celebrating culture on Kaurna Land through workshops in traditional games, storytelling, native plants, art, and dancing.

'The World Before Us' – Year 1s Journeying Through Time

As part of their History unit, our Year 1 students from Ms Daou’s class recently made a special visit to the Senior Campus to explore the fascinating 147-year story of CBC. It was a joy to see their excitement as they stepped into spaces filled with history, tradition, and meaning.

The students visited the peaceful Sacred Garden, explored the heritage-listed Brothers House, and uncovered treasures in the Archives Museum. We were incredibly fortunate to be guided by Br John Ahern, whose deep knowledge and live passion for the College’s mission brought the past to life in an engaging way for the young ones – many of whom were only born the same year our newest building, the Wakefield Building, was launched (2019)!

It was wonderful to hear the boys already excited about being here for our 150-year celebrations, which are just around the corner!

Project Compassion

As we celebrate this season of hope and renewal, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude for supporting us, to support Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion this Lent.

As we reflect on the Easter message of love, compassion, and new beginnings, we are reminded of the incredible impact these contributions make. It’s not too late to donate. Please ensure your donation boxes are returned to the College by the end of this week, or final donations are made via the QKR! App.

Thank you for standing with us, as we Unite Against Poverty through Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion 2025 Lenten appeal.

Year 4 Instrumental Immersion

In Week 10, our Year 4 students received the instruments that they will be learning throughout the year.

You may have seen images of our fantastic purple and white trumpets on Instagram and Facebook – these will be played alongside trombones, clarinets and percussion by the members of 4 Purple.

In very exciting news, some of the students in 4 White are playing string instruments for the first time in our immersion program. We have four cellists and eight violinists, who are being joined by flutes and percussion.

Many thanks to the Friends of Music who raised money throughout last year to go towards the purchase of many of these instruments.

Vocal Project

Many thanks to the students of Vocal Project who led the singing in Monday’s Whole College Easter Mass. Using music to serve is an important aspect of what we do, and the way in which the boys sang and behaved was fantastic.

CBC 6 defeated Adelaide High School 3

Best Players: Teague J, Sebastian D, Wil K, Annicet A, Antoni D

What a way to finish the Term One season — with our fourth win in a row, this time against a strong Adelaide High team.

Incredibly, we began the season with three consecutive losses, and it looked like it was going to be a very challenging term. But to the CBC boys’ credit, they worked hard at training, improved their skills, and were rewarded for their effort with four straight wins.

The doubles were played first, and all three matches were tightly contested, each going to a third and deciding set. CBC came out on top, winning the doubles 2–1, though we only held a one-set advantage heading into the singles matches. Congratulations to Teague and Sebastian, and Wil and Annicet, for their doubles wins. A special mention to Antoni & Edward, who played an outstanding match against quality opposition, narrowly losing 19–21 in the third set.

Next came the singles, and after all matches were completed, the final score was 4–2, with CBC securing an outstanding victory. Congratulations to Teague, Sebastian, Edward, and Wil, who all won their singles matches in straight sets. Special mention goes to Antoni, who faced a very talented opponent and fought hard, only to go down 16–21 in the third set. His effort and determination were truly commendable.

Congratulations to all the CBC players on your effort and attitude throughout the term. We now look forward to the Term Four season with great confidence.

Mr Peter Tippins
Coach

St Ignatius College 9 defeated CBC 3

Best Players: Maxwell, Andrew, Marden

St Ignatius College proved too strong on the day, showing their class across all matches. While the final result didn’t go our way, every CBC player gave their best and showed great determination throughout.

Pleasingly, several players improved as the match went on, adapting their game and gaining confidence with each set. Despite the loss, there were valuable takeaways and signs of growth that will help in future matches.

Well done to all on a strong effort.

St John’s Grammar 5 defeated CBC 4

Best Player: Toby D

Unfortunately, our team was without our number 1 and 2 players, which meant everyone had to play two positions higher in the order. This proved too difficult for the team to overcome.

Despite the opposition only fielding five players, we were unable to win a set in the doubles and managed just two out of five singles matches. Serving let us down more than anything, so it will be a key focus at our next training session.

A good effort from the boys, but improvement is needed if we want better results.

CBC 9 defeated Nazareth College Nil

Best Player: James V

Christian Brothers College delivered a commanding 9–0 win against Nazareth College in their latest tennis match, with impressive performances across both the doubles and singles events.

In the doubles, Oliver Masters and Josh Hockley set the tone with a confident 6–1 win in the 1st doubles. Aidan Cheng and James Vu followed with an even more dominant 6–0 victory in the 2nd doubles, while Geon Ryu and Sonam Sherpa completed the doubles sweep, also winning 6–0 in the 3rd doubles.

CBC’s dominance continued in the singles. Oliver Masters secured a 6–1 win in the 1st singles, showing excellent form. Josh Hockley was equally impressive in the 2nd singles, cruising to a 6–0 victory. Aidan Cheng faced a tougher challenge in the 3rd singles but prevailed 6–4 in a solid performance. Geon Ryu fought hard for a 7–5 win in the 4th singles, showing resilience when it mattered most.

In the 5th singles, Benjamin (Sze-Yong) Koh-Buckland triumphed 7–6 in a tense tiebreak, demonstrating his composure under pressure. James Vu rounded out the clean sweep with another close 7–6 win in the 6th singles, edging out his opponent in a second gripping tiebreak.

CBC’s consistent and strong performances across all matches highlight the team’s depth and determination. They’ll look to carry this momentum into their final match of Term 1.

Middle A Tennis

CBC 8 defeated St Paul’s College 1

Best Player: Ben

Our final match for the term saw both the Middle A and B teams playing simultaneously at St Paul’s. My pre-match coaching advice was simple: relax and enjoy the final match, especially after facing some tough opposition throughout the term.

That mindset brought out some of the best tennis I’ve seen from the boys all season. There were minimal unforced errors, clever tactics, great finesse — and, as always, excellent sportsmanship on display.

It was fantastic to see so many parents and Adon Cousins come out to support the boys, and we wrapped up the term with our best result yet: 8 sets won!

It’s been a truly rewarding term of coaching such a dedicated group of boys, full of character, varied senses of humour, and consistently outstanding sportsmanship.

Middle B Tennis

St Paul’s College 5 defeated CBC 4

Best Players: Jensen and Nicolas

The final match of the term saw both the Middle A and B teams playing simultaneously against St Paul’s. With the opposition fielding only four players for a six-player team, some of their stronger players kindly filled in for the lower singles and doubles, making for tougher matchups in those spots.

It was fantastic to see so many parents there supporting the boys, and a real highlight for me was watching both middle teams play some truly spectacular tennis.

Jensen and Nicolas, both Year 7 boys, were a real asset to the team, delivering a convincing 6–0 win in the number 1 doubles and backing it up with comfortable singles victories.

It was a close overall result, with CBC winning more games in total – 32 to St Paul’s 23 – but finishing just one set behind. A strong finish to what has been a rewarding and competitive term of tennis.

Year 7B Tennis

CBC White 5 defeated CBC Purple 4

Best Player: Mitchell

The Year 7 boys were all excited for a special occasion – our first time fielding two Year 7 teams, with the final match of Term 1 played against each other on our stunning parkland courts on Hutt Street.

For this match, we decided to mix the two teams and let the boys choose their own doubles partners. It was a joy to watch them so engaged, using clever tactics, finesse, and saving some of their best tennis for the occasion.

The singles matches featured long rallies and many close results, with all players displaying impressive sportsmanship throughout. It was a wonderful way to finish the term, made even better by the strong turnout of supportive parents.

A big thank you to staff members Deon Visser and Claire Visser for their dedication – both in following up with the boys at school each week to ensure we had two full teams, and for offering valuable technique tips along the way.

CBC Primary Purple 26 defeated CBC Primary White 24

Best Player: Aaron

This was a competitive tennis event featuring three doubles and six singles matches. Seven students represented CBC White: Aaron, Sebastion P, Oliver, Sonny, Jacob, Sebastion M, and Devin.

The CBC White team secured one doubles win and three singles victories. Throughout the event, the boys showcased impressive tennis skills, strategic play, and strong team spirit.

Although we narrowly lost – falling short by just one game – it was an incredibly close and hard-fought contest. A great effort from all involved.

CBC 2 defeated Concordia College Nil

Best Player: Sangee

It’s a win for the team – and what a great way to end the season! Each of the boys stepped up and performed exceptionally well in today’s match. The energy was high from the first serve to the final point, and it was matched by sharp game sense and excellent teamwork on the court.

The players communicated confidently, supported one another throughout, and executed plays with precision. It was clear that all the hard work at training paid off, as the team showcased both skill and cohesion.

A fantastic end to the season – well done to all involved!

CBC 10 drew Mercedes College 10

Best Player: Jacob S

In our final game of the term, it took three quarters for the boys to hit their straps. We controlled the ball for much of the match but wasted countless opportunities in the forward line. Trailing by two goals at halftime and three goals going into the final quarter, the team needed a big response.

Our last quarter was outstanding. We kicked five goals and found ourselves a goal up near the end of the match. To Mercedes' credit, they responded with a brilliant goal to equalise.

Jacob Seaman and Nick Chant were solid throughout the match. Casey Mercer (2 goals) and Robert Wilson (1) were resolute in defence and created space in attack during the second half. We were also well served by Ben Hindes and Emmet Fay in front of goal, while Tobias Brisban and Michael Henley worked tirelessly all game.

A special mention to Oliver Hindes, who made his debut in the Open team and gave his all for the cause.

It was a fantastic fightback from our boys and a strong way to close out the term.

St Ignatius College 11 defeated CBC 8

Best Player: Emmet F

It was our final game for the term, and the boys were eager to finish on a winning note. The first quarter was tightly contested, but a couple of late goals from St Ignatius saw them take a two-goal lead into the break.

The rest of the match remained a close battle, but St Iggy's proved just a little too strong in the key moments. Emmet Fay was our standout performer, showing great consistency throughout – even playing in his school shorts didn’t affect his impressive form!

Chris Chant and Niccolo Napoli were both dangerous up forward, while Aksh Hu made several excellent saves in goal. Oliver Hindes and Lachlan Nguyen were rock-solid in defence, showing composure under pressure.

Fenn Riglin-Trigg and Jaxon Wright continue to develop their skills and play their best games of the term.

We now look forward to Term 4, where we’ll continue to build on our strong team spirit and growing momentum.
