Term 1, Week 7 - 14 March, 2025
CBC acknowledges that we are meeting on the traditional country of the Kaurna people of the Adelaide Plains. We recognise and respect their cultural heritage, beliefs and relationship with the land. We acknowledge that they are of continuing importance to the Kaurna people living today.

This week's Principal's Message from Mr David Johnston

Alison RonoastroAlison Ronoastro

A huge well done to all our Year 3 and 5 students who participated in this year’s NAPLAN assessments throughout the week! They started with Writing on Wednesday and wrapped up with Numeracy on Friday, demonstrating focus, perseverance, and resilience.

While these assessments provide valuable insight into where the boys are in their literacy and numeracy journey, they don’t measure everything that makes them unique and special. NAPLAN won’t tell us who is a great friend, an amazing artist, a talented athlete, or a LEGO master – but we see and celebrate all these qualities every day.

We are incredibly proud of their efforts and look forward to using this information to support their learning and growth in the best way possible.

On Friday 7 March we marked the beginning of Lent by wearing purple for the day – an initiative proudly led by our Junior Campus Leaders (JCLs). This was the first of many events planned throughout the term to raise funds for Caritas Australia, encouraging our students to actively live out the values of compassion, generosity, and service during this Lenten season.

Here’s what’s happening:

  • Week 7 (Friday): Soccer Shootout – Students took part in a friendly competition for a gold coin donation.
  • Week 8 (Monday): St Patrick’s Day – Students are encouraged to wear green and bring a gold coin donation.
  • Week 9 (Friday): Coin Competition – Each class will compete to see who can create the longest line of coins, with the winning class earning a special lesson in the park!
  • Week 11: 'Guess How Many Easter Eggs in the Jar' – A fun challenge where students can make a guess for a donation, with all proceeds going towards Caritas.

All funds raised through these initiatives will contribute to our final total for Caritas Australia, supporting those in need both locally and globally.

Thank you to our students, families, and staff for your generosity and enthusiasm in making this a meaningful Lenten season.

On Friday 7 March the Junior Campus proudly took part in the World’s Greatest Shave, with students donating $5 to have their hair coloured in support of this important cause. Through their generosity, we raised over $320, which contributed to the incredible total raised by the Senior Campus.

This year, we were especially proud to see four brave Year 5 students take their commitment even further by shaving their heads to support the fight against blood cancer. Their courage and selflessness truly embody the spirit of giving and solidarity.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated and supported this initiative – your contributions are making a real difference.

Junior Campus students participating in the World's Great Shave

Thank you to everyone who attended the Community Mass on Friday 7 March. We certainly had more families in attendance, and we look forward to seeing more people attend, so please keep 4 April free and come along before staying for Sports Day.

Don't Forget! Coffee Mornings

Every Friday morning, you're invited to drop by the Junior Campus for a coffee! It’s a great chance to catch up, connect, and start the day with a warm cup and good company. We’d love to see you there!

Coffee Mornings Every Friday from 8.20am at the Junior Campus

Thank you to all the mums who joined Karen Chambers and me for our first Mum’s Night Out on Wednesday 5 March at The Coopers Alehouse. It was a fantastic evening filled with great conversation, laughter, and the opportunity to connect as a school community.

We also thank all the Junior Campus dads who joined Mr Simon Nardecchia, Mr Luke Teakle and Mr Anthony Callisto for Dad’s Night Out on Tuesday 11 March, also at The Coopers Alehouse. It was lovely to see so many new dads join us and have the opportunity to chat with other dads at the school.

We put out the challenge to beat last term’s attendance – and you delivered! Seeing so many dads coming together to connect and enjoy the night was terrific.

With such a good turnout, we’re already looking forward to the next Dad’s Night Out – let’s see if we can grow the numbers even more! Thank you again for making it such a great success!

Heads Up for Week 11!

Just a quick note to let you know that I will be away in China for the week with our Senior students during Week 11. If you need any assistance at the Junior Campus, please reach out to Mrs Karen Chambers, who will be available to support you.

Morning Drop-Off Reminder

As part of our duty of care, once parents bring their children into the Junior Campus courtyard, this marks the official handover to school staff. From this point, students are under our supervision to ensure a smooth and safe transition into the school day.

We understand that some parents enjoy walking their child over to the park before school begins, and we fully support this. However, for everyone’s safety, we kindly ask that you:

  • Use the pedestrian crossing when crossing the road.
  • Ensure children walk safely – please avoid carrying them at any time, particularly when crossing.

These measures are in place to protect both you and your child, ensuring a safe and structured start to the school day. Thank you for your cooperation and support!

Staff Spotlight: Ms Shenae Dougan

What inspired you to become a teacher?

I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. My experiences teaching dance made me sure that I wanted to work with children and that I had a natural ability to help them grow and reach their potential. My high school English Teacher, Brigitta Ragg, was also a big source of inspiration for me. She always worked hard to have fun, support our wellbeing, and encourage us to follow our passions. Her creativity and bright personality made school a safe place for me, and I want to make my students feel the same way! Her encouragement and support motivated me to be the best student and now teacher that I can be.

What is your favourite thing about teaching at our school?

Teaching at an all-boys school with energetic, excited students who are eager to learn is such a privilege. CBC offers so many amazing opportunities for students to learn inside and outside of the classroom, no matter their interests. I love how our school community supports the boys to explore and develop so many skills, supporting them to thrive. Additionally, the incredible staff culture we have makes me feel welcome and supported each day. The camaraderie among the staff and the shared commitment to student success create a positive and collaborative atmosphere that I truly appreciate and feel lucky to be a part of.

What is one lesson or skill you hope every student takes away from your class?

I am passionate about supporting the boys to be respectful people who are responsible, resilient and rational. Building students' confidence and self-worth and helping them identify their strengths is at the heart of everything I do. I want my students to know that they are valued and that they can achieve anything they set their minds to. It's important to me that they leave my class with a strong sense of self and the belief that they can make a positive impact in the world, as well as having the skills to do so. 'The best teachers are those who show you where to look but don't tell you what to see.'

What do you enjoy most about teaching your current year level or subject?

I love teaching Year 4 because the students are at a stage where their personalities and interests are blossoming. They are very eager to learn and are developing the skills to engage in their learning independently. Witnessing the ‘ah ha’ moments that come so frequently as they connect their prior knowledge to new concepts is very exciting! The social and emotional growth at this age is also phenomenal and watching and supporting the students to overcome challenges, make new friends, and work hard towards their goals is very rewarding.

What do you enjoy doing outside of teaching (hobbies, sports, travel, etc.)?

Most of my time outside of school is taken up by my involvement as a coach at Seaton Calisthenics Club. I have been involved in callisthenics since I was 2 years old and have now been coaching for 10 years! I spend a lot of time coming up with exciting themes, music, and choreography, which I teach to a team of girls aged 7–11. I am very passionate about dance and building confidence through performing. I also enjoy going to the beach and spending most weekends swimming and soaking up the sunshine.

What are you most looking forward to this school year?

A highlight of this year will be the Year 4 Camp in El Shaddai. I am eager to watch the boys tackle some new challenges and work together to enjoy activities like rock climbing, laser tag, and archery. It’s a privilege to watch the students shine outside of the classroom environment and it is a wonderful opportunity for them to develop teamwork skills, build resilience, and create lasting memories.

Wow! – How awesome is the CBC community?

Once again, the World’s Greatest Shave event reinforced this absolute fact!

Staff, students, parents and barbers united together for this fun event to raise funds for a very important cause: The Leukaemia Foundation.

CBC proved itself to be the number one fundraiser in South Australia yet again by raising a whopping $ 19,784.00!!

This amount includes almost $4,000 raised by four Junior Campus students

  • Harrison Bond
  • Noah Radovanovic
  • Max Simpson
  • Sonny Sutherland

At the Senior Campus, the event was held on Friday, 7 March, at recess, and saw students and teachers bravely shave and colour their hair in solidarity with those affected by blood cancer.

The atmosphere was electric with excitement and support, as everyone gathered to cheer on the participants.

Students were also not disappointed with the blue iced doughnuts on sale – raising funds and also filling hungry bellies! Always a highlight for the boys at CBC fundraisers!

Special thanks to our brave shavers who showed immense courage and dedication to this worthy cause.

Once again, a special thanks go out to Fandi Scissorhand Barbers, as the event would not have been possible without the generous support from this local business. Donating their time every year makes the day run smoothly. Once again, old scholar Osama Obeid was one of the barbers. It is always fantastic to see old scholars excited to be back at school to contribute to its success and to support the students.

Great work, CBC!

Celebrating Women’s Voices: CBC Students Attend SA Women's Week Breakfast

On Monday 3 Match 2025, in the week leading up to International Women's Day, eight CBC student leaders attended the South Australian Women's Week Breakfast. The event, hosted by St Peter’s College, was dedicated to celebrating the voices and experiences of women with a focus on meaningful discussion to drive change towards gender equality.

The breakfast was an opportunity to hear from a powerful panel of inspiring women who shared their stories of overcoming sexism and forging paths in their respective fields.

CBC Students attend Women's Week Breakfast

The panel featured Fiona Dorman, Jessica Adamson, and Lucy Stephan, each of whom offered unique insights into the challenges women face in both personal and professional spaces. Fiona Dorman, a passionate advocate for gender equality, spoke candidly about her experiences in the workplace, while Jessica Adamson, a prominent figure in media, shared her perspective on sexism in the media industry. Lucy Stephan, an Olympic gold medalist, talked about the gender disparities in sports and the importance of resilience.

The event provided a space for reflection and dialogue, allowing the students to engage with the powerful messages shared by the panel. As the audience listened to the stories of these successful women, the male students gained a deeper understanding of the pervasive impact of sexism and the importance of supporting gender equality.

The breakfast served as a reminder that fostering a more inclusive society begins with listening, understanding, and standing up for change. The students left with a renewed sense of responsibility to challenge stereotypes, promote gender equity, and be active allies in the fight for equality.

The Panellists included:

Fiona Dorman
Chair, Premier’s Council for Women
State President and National Vice President of the National Council of Women
A trained scientist and business founder

Jessica Adamson
Award-winning journalist, event host/facilitator and speaker.
Covered some of the world’s biggest news stories in her 24 years at the Seven Network.
Passionate about sharing the stories of people from all walks of life.

Lucy Stephan OAM
Represented Australia in Rowing at three Olympic Games
Gold medallist in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in the coxless four
Two-time World Champion

NAPLAN

This week, our students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 undertook the annual NAPLAN assessments, completing four key tests:

  • Writing
  • Reading
  • Conventions of Language

These assessments play a crucial role in providing insight into student learning, allowing us to identify areas of strength and opportunities for growth. While NAPLAN is often seen as a major academic milestone, it is important to remember that it is just one metric that helps build a broader picture of each student’s development.

We want to take a moment to applaud our students for their application and perseverance throughout the testing period. Sitting four assessments across multiple days can be a mentally demanding experience, yet our students displayed focus, resilience, and a genuine commitment to doing their best. We were also particularly impressed with how they navigated the online testing environment with confidence. While technology can sometimes present challenges, our students approached the process with adaptability, ensuring a smooth experience with minimal disruptions. I would also like to thank our IT department for their ongoing support in dealing with the technical difficulties some boys experienced over the week.

A huge thank you must also go to the staff involved in the planning, coordination, and administration of NAPLAN. Running a large-scale assessment such as NAPLAN requires a significant amount of preparation, and we acknowledge the dedication of our teachers and admin staff who worked behind the scenes to ensure the process was seamless. From setting up testing environments to guiding students through each assessment, their hard work has been instrumental in making NAPLAN a success.

Catchup NAPLAN sessions:

For those students who were unable to sit their assessments this week due to illness or other commitments, catch-up sessions will be available on Monday and Tuesday of next week (Week 8). If your child needs to complete any outstanding tests, a schedule will be distributed later today.

Once results are available later in the year, we will use them as a school to reflect on student progress, refine teaching strategies, and celebrate the achievements of our students and staff. Data from NAPLAN allows us to better support student learning and tailor our programs to meet the needs of each cohort. However, we also remind families that while these assessments are valuable, they do not define a student’s overall abilities or potential. We encourage parents to engage in conversations with their sons about their learning, reinforcing the message that growth, effort, and resilience are just as important as any test result.

Outdoor Education

When we think about school subjects, it’s easy to picture students sitting in classrooms, taking notes, writing essays, or conducting experiments in a science lab. While these are essential components of learning, education is far more than just textbooks and assessments. Outdoor Education turns this traditional idea of learning on its head, offering students the opportunity to engage with the natural world, develop resilience, and build practical skills that will serve them well beyond their school years.

This past week, our Year 12 Outdoor Education students embarked on an unforgettable excursion, immersing themselves in hands-on learning experiences that tested their leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities. Through activities that challenged both their physical and mental endurance, students discovered new strengths, overcame obstacles, and deepened their understanding of the world around them.

Unlike traditional subjects, which often assess students through written reports and exams, Outdoor Education focuses on experiential learning, where students are actively engaged in real-world scenarios. The skills gained through this subject – critical thinking, adaptability, resilience, and collaboration are invaluable, equipping students with a foundation that extends beyond academic success into personal and professional growth.

As we wrap up another dynamic week of learning, both inside and outside the classroom, we want to acknowledge the continued efforts of our students and staff. Whether it be through structured assessments like NAPLAN or the immersive, hands-on experiences of Outdoor Education, each opportunity for learning contributes to the development of well-rounded, capable, and confident young men.

We’re in Lent

Lent has well and truly begun, bringing with it many opportunities for our College Community. The season commenced last week with our annual Shrove Tuesday celebrations followed by Ash Wednesday liturgies and Community Masses on our Senior and Junior campuses, marking the beginning of this sacred time in the Christian calendar.

Shrove Tuesday

Shrove Tuesday was celebrated with great enthusiasm across the College, featuring in-class activities and a delicious pancake sale at break time. Hundreds of pancakes were cooked and enjoyed, creating a wonderful atmosphere.

A heartfelt thank you to the P&F Association, our canteen staff, and our Student Leaders who generously volunteered their time to make this event a success. Their efforts not only allowed us to share in the joy of this pre-Lenten tradition but also helped raise awareness and support for Caritas Australia's Project Compassion.

Ash Wednesday

The following day, our College Community gathered to observe Ash Wednesday, a day of reflection and renewal. Across our campuses, students and staff participated in liturgies and received the ashes as a sign of repentance and commitment to the Lenten journey. Our Year 7 students, who were on camp, also took part in a special liturgy, ensuring they remained connected to this important spiritual tradition.

Ash Wednesday Liturgies at Junior and Senior Campuses

As Lent continues, we encourage all students and families to embrace this season with open hearts, engaging in acts of kindness, prayer, and service. There are many opportunities available within our College Community to deepen our faith and support those in need through Project Compassion and other initiatives. This week the Junior Campus Student Leaders (JCLs) have hosted a soccer shoot-out and are looking forward to ‘Wear it Green’ for St Patrick’s Day on Monday.

Project Compassion donation boxes are available around the campuses and electronic donations can be made via the QKR! App.

Wishing you all a meaningful and blessed Lenten journey.

Introduction to Adoration

As part of the Lenten events occurring throughout this season, all students and staff are welcome to join for an Introduction to Adoration, an experience of peaceful, contemplative prayer in the Edmund Rice Chapel with Fr Matthew Newman.

Altar Serving Training

It is great to see so many students keen to be part of our altar serving team from across our college! Training for new and returning altar servers is happening this Monday, led by Dylan C, Jonathan B and Fr Matthew.

If your son is interested, there’s still time to join, just contact me via DM or at the college before Monday at midday.

Looking forward to seeing our new altar servers in action soon!

St Vincent De Paul Group in Action

We’re off to a buzzing start with nearly 100 students and staff signed up and ready to serve! Each week, our St Vincent de Paul Group prepares meals for Vinnies SA, with food served by Fred’s Van every Thursday evening.

Christ in the Desert
(Artist: Ivan Kramskoi, Oil on canvas, 1872)

Kramskoi’s Christ in the Desert portrays Jesus during his 40-day fast, alone in the wilderness, deep in contemplation. His hunched posture and the barren landscape evoke a sense of isolation and struggle, reminding us of the trials of our lives. The painting challenges us to reflect on resilience, faith, and God’s presence.

Music

On Wednesday of this week, 34 of our Senior Campus musicians walked down to St Mary’s College to participate with the girls from both St Mary's College and St Aloysius College in the annual ‘Sounds of City Schools’ concert.

Vocal Project (the core choral ensemble at CBC) were joined by Rock Bands 1 and 2, Big Band 1 and Jazz Combo, and then all students combined with those from the other schools to close the concert with the Starlight classic, ‘We Built This City’.

The boys were outstanding. Rather than simply sing and play their instruments, they performed – the enjoyment in making music together was evident on their faces, and we are incredibly proud of what they achieved.

Sounds of City Schools Concert at St Mary's College

Special thanks to our 2025 Music Captains – Sam Lagana and Nicolas Stefanovski – for their continued leadership, demonstrated in their confident MC abilities, encouragement of the younger students, and contribution to packing up after all other students had left.

Thanks also to Dr Del Col and his White Coat team for contributing to this community event by cooking hundreds of sausages, serving dinner to all the students, and selling food and drink to the audience.

Upcoming events before the end of the term include:

  • Choir workshop with Kai Katamura, a vocal percussionist from Japan who tours internationally with vocal ensembles
  • Recording of each music team for the virtual Autumn Concert
  • Serving the CBC community through leading worship music in the Easter Mass

Debating

Pre-season debating sessions are being held on Tuesday afternoons in W206 – even if not planning on competing for CBC, it is a great opportunity to improve general knowledge and public speaking skills. This week we did a deep dive into the Australian Constitution, as a broad understanding of this document can assist in short-prep debates (where teams have one hour and no technology to prepare their arguments).

Chess

A reminder that we continue to run two sessions each week – whilst this is the pre-season, it is a great opportunity to get started with coaching and practice. Wednesdays at recess are held in the Music Room with David from Chesslife; Thursday afternoons are held in W206 where we put our new skills into action on the board against an array of different opponents.

During competition season, attendance at both of these sessions will be a compulsory requirement before representing the college.

As always, questions can be sent through to me at any time.

Middle A Badminton

CBC 6 defeated St Paul’s College 3

In the battle of the Edmund Rice schools, CBC defeated our sister school in St Paul’s College and in doing so, won our first game for the term. After coming off three consecutive defeats, it was a great reward for the CBC players to finally get a win on the board. The doubles were played first, and after the games were completed, CBC had won 2 games to 1 but only held a mere one-set advantage going into the singles games. Congratulations to the following players: Jo and Annicet, for winning their game in straight sets; Sebastian and Ali (playing his first game for the A Team), winning their game 21-19 in the third set. The result was now going to come down to the singles games. To the credit of the CBC players, we won the singles four games to two and secured a thrilling victory. Congratulations to: Sebastian and Annicet for winning their games in straight sets; Jake and Jo for showing resilience and determination to win their games in the third set.

Special mention to Liam, who, even though he did not win his games, played very well against a very talented opponent. Congratulations to all the CBC players for persisting and never giving up, to finally record a well-deserved victory.

Year 5/6 Cricket

Pembroke School 2/148 defeated CBC 9/41

Another great game this week, and once again, we had a full team, while the opposition only had five players. Although we didn’t come away with the win, the boys remained positive and determined, showing great sportsmanship and effort throughout the match.

Our throwing and catching skills have been a major focus at training, and it was fantastic to see clear improvements in our fielding. The boys’ coordination and teamwork in the field made a real difference, and we will continue to build on this.

Over the coming weeks, we will shift our focus to communication and encouragement, ensuring the boys support one another and work as a team. We also faced some challenges with the wicket conditions, which tested our resilience – a great learning experience for everyone!

A big well done to the team for their hard work and perseverance. Looking forward to seeing even more progress next game!

Year 4 Cricket

St Ignatius College 8/129 defeated CBC 10/27

St Ignatius started well and had some very capable Year 4 cricketers. It was a great experience for the boys to play against very good opposition. CBC did well in the field on a hot afternoon and improvements have been made in our bowling ability!

Drive B Tennis

CBC 7 defeated Prince Alfred College 2

Our boy, for the most part, were able to dominate throughout all of their matches. It was only with the Number 1 ranking where the opponent played at a very high level, that we were not able to overcome. With our Number 1 bumped up to Drive A, we had to ensure that our team filled in the blanks strategically. This ended up being successful. Several of our players are seeking private coaching as they are determined to better their skills.

Senior B Tennis

CBC 5 defeated Pedare Christian College 4

Unfortunately, CBC had to forfeit both the first doubles and top singles due to player availability.

In the second doubles, John Downes and James Vu dominated, winning 6-1. Sonam Sherpa and Benjamin (Sze-Yong) Koh-Buckland followed up with a 6-3 victory in the third doubles.

In singles, Novak Vukovic narrowly lost 4-6 in the second singles. John Downes responded with a commanding 6-0 win in the third singles. James Vu fought hard but lost 4-6 in the fourth singles. Benjamin (Sze-Yong) Koh-Buckland won a tense 7-6, battle in the fifth singles, while Sonam Sherpa completed the singles with a solid 6-1 victory.

Though the match was a challenging one for CBC, the team showed resilience and strong performances to pull off the 5-4 victory.

Middle A Tennis

Prince Alfred College 9 defeated CBC Nil

We had three CBC teams all playing at the same time this Saturday at PAC so a few brothers were playing in each team so a delight for their parents. PAC have 21 teams in Middle and Senior competition and my Middle A boys were completely dominated by the stronger opposition. The boys tried extremely hard with PAC being just too powerful and accurate. This will be a talking point at training this week.

Middle B Tennis

Prince Alfred College 8 defeated CBC 1

The boys played exceptionally well against a strong PAC side. There were many excellent rallies and shots such as a backwards scoop lob from Mitchell! However, PAC were just too strong and it wasn’t enough to get the win. Props to Christian (Year 7) who won our only set with the score of 6-4! It’s honestly awesome to see the Year 7 boys play and challenge themselves against their opponents and teammates at training! Hopefully we can get the win against Rostrevor in two weeks’ time!

Year 7B Purple Tennis

CBC 8 defeated Concordia College 1

The strongest Year 7 Purple team for the term was made possible with Year 7 White having a bye. All three doubles had a 6-0 win, which saw a lifting mood amongst the boys. We had two prep boys playing as well: Thomas and Gabriel, who embraced the challenge of Year 7 Tennis. A rewarding afternoon with some excellent results after a few weeks of defeat. Well played, boys, and I can see improvement each week.

Primary B2 Purple Tennis

St Peter’s College 30 defeated CBC 23

The Primary B2 Purple Tennis team gave a strong performance in both doubles and singles games. Despite a loss this week, Primary B2 Purple remained positive, kept playing hard, and showed great resilience. Their attitude and respect for the game were impressive, and they demonstrated excellent teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the match. It was a challenging game, but the boys handled it with maturity and continued to give their best.

Open A Volleyball

Pedare Christian College 3 defeated CBC Nil

This game, unfortunately, was a big loss for the team; the boys unfortunately did not perform well like in other games; their energy level was down and they made fewer calls. This greatly affected the performance of every player on the team. However, by the third set, they started to enjoy the game more and having fun with it, so they managed to have some great plays. Other than that, game performance is less than usual; some boys might need to re-evaluate of their strengths and weaknesses to better fit the team composition.

The boys worked hard on their foundations of volleyball, cooperatively feeding the ball to attack the opposition. They communicated well and pumped up their teammates. They won the first set and lost the second, but stayed positive. They won the last serve and came back from 4 points down to win by 1.

Middle B Water Polo

CBC 7 defeated Prince Alfred College 4

This was a tight contest from the start. We never trailed in the match, but in the first half, every time we scored, the PAC team came straight back.  The scoreline at Quarter time was 1-all and we narrowly had the edge at 3-2 at the half.  In the second half, we gradually asserted dominance to come away with a 3-goal win.  Emmet Fay was again instrumental.  He had a two-player hard tag but still managed to get the ball and distribute consistently to our free man. Niccolò Napoli and Chris Chant were dangerous in the forward lines and Lachlan Nguyen had a great game playing the linkman. Aksh Hu was as solid as a rock in the goals and Ollie Hindes was our best defender, making numerous stops off the PAC attacks.  Fenn Riglin-Trigg and Rossi Tran, in only their second game, found it a much tougher opposition this week.  They definitely proved they belong in water polo.  Both made some vital plays at important times of the game.  This group of boys have bonded well and have taken on any challenge thrown at them.  A great result.
