Music

On Wednesday of this week, 34 of our Senior Campus musicians walked down to St Mary’s College to participate with the girls from both St Mary's College and St Aloysius College in the annual ‘Sounds of City Schools’ concert.

Vocal Project (the core choral ensemble at CBC) were joined by Rock Bands 1 and 2, Big Band 1 and Jazz Combo, and then all students combined with those from the other schools to close the concert with the Starlight classic, ‘We Built This City’.

The boys were outstanding. Rather than simply sing and play their instruments, they performed – the enjoyment in making music together was evident on their faces, and we are incredibly proud of what they achieved.

Special thanks to our 2025 Music Captains – Sam Lagana and Nicolas Stefanovski – for their continued leadership, demonstrated in their confident MC abilities, encouragement of the younger students, and contribution to packing up after all other students had left.

Thanks also to Dr Del Col and his White Coat team for contributing to this community event by cooking hundreds of sausages, serving dinner to all the students, and selling food and drink to the audience.

Upcoming events before the end of the term include:

  • Choir workshop with Kai Katamura, a vocal percussionist from Japan who tours internationally with vocal ensembles
  • Recording of each music team for the virtual Autumn Concert
  • Serving the CBC community through leading worship music in the Easter Mass

Debating

Pre-season debating sessions are being held on Tuesday afternoons in W206 – even if not planning on competing for CBC, it is a great opportunity to improve general knowledge and public speaking skills. This week we did a deep dive into the Australian Constitution, as a broad understanding of this document can assist in short-prep debates (where teams have one hour and no technology to prepare their arguments).

Chess

A reminder that we continue to run two sessions each week – whilst this is the pre-season, it is a great opportunity to get started with coaching and practice. Wednesdays at recess are held in the Music Room with David from Chesslife; Thursday afternoons are held in W206 where we put our new skills into action on the board against an array of different opponents.

During competition season, attendance at both of these sessions will be a compulsory requirement before representing the college.

As always, questions can be sent through to me at any time.
